I'd love if there was an addon that showed the 5 closest enemy players (or those within range) along with their health and what they're casting. Is this type of addon possible even if not yet developed?

Dont know if it exist, but its possible.
You cant determine distance to enemy units, but you can check if spell X is in range to an enemy.
So read out combatlog events and check if these units are in range for a spell and display it in a frame.
There are some addons who already filter units from combatlog to display it in a frame. Vanaskos for example (Kill on sight addon).
Sometimes i think for such an addon for my own needs:
Search combatlog for activities of hostile healspells. If these casters are in range then display these in a frame.
Its possible.
Edit: Try out Vanaskos and play around with configuration. Maybe it works perfectly for you.

Carbonite will show you just about all that... except what they are casting. You can get it at wowinterface. However, the addon is also a quest tracker / helper, minimap, map, button wrangler, gatherer, and will find the closest friendly toon on the same quest as you. I gave up quest helper, sexy map, gather mate, and cartographer. You'll see a big flash on the minimap along with a dot that follows the enemy player(s). It gives you the name, class and level of that player(s) (if you can see their level). You might need to get a little closer to see what they are casting :P

What about Paranoia? Haven't used it much myself but I think it does a similar thing.

Click on my sig then on the top at my web site the picture "greatest UI ever" and you will see carbonite in the lower right of the UI. It brings in the normal map and makes them both nice and square, you get those dots that show the enemy and a "punks list" (in the upper right) listing the enemies. Carbonite is very nice all around and I recomend getting it. You should be able to set the range and fliters on a combat log to see what spells are going off in your area. Hitmode might do it I forget though. If you set the range out far enough and to show only enemy spells you should keep up with whats going on enemy wise.

Sam, you know the "dots" for enemies are where you are when the enemy first appeared in your log, right? Which makes it almost useless except for camping?
Re: the OP, there was an addon that did exactly this way back pre-BC. That addon's functionality has since been nerfed. So, no, there's no easy way to do this. Something like Gladiator would work a bit, and Carbonite's punks list does show you everyone in combat log range of you. It isn't perfect, though.

I use paranoia...
But it has no distance on, but its very usefull. It often picks up enemy players I diden't notich myself.
But it can also be quite annoying some times, atleast on my screen it bugs up a bit.
I use it to not getting jumped in world pvp.

Thank you for all the useful replies!
I'm hoping to have an enemy list similar to my vuhdo/healbot/whatever list. Just as I can right click on a friends bar and have all healers cast renew or whatever, I'd like to have a similar dynamic list of enemies where if I click on the bar it will attempt to cast corruption.
I'll take a look at the addons mentioned above and see if any of them do anything close :) I understand that it won't be able to sort the list according to who is closest, but it would be nice if it showed only enemies in range of a particular spell and the list was in the same order/position on every toon.

Paranoia:
you can easily target them (if you are out of combat) by clicking on their name
Thats very pity :(

I like Carbonite, shows them on your minimap as well. One hell of a great addon. My personal favorite :) Has so many features hard to list them all but enemy detection is one of them.
