View Full Version : Qunit or Penta?

Is it Qunitboxing or Pentaboxing?
This is to put Griznah to shame that Penta represents a shape that covers an area - quint however is more of a simpler numeric form.
For example, "hexagon" is a six sided shape but you don't say "hexaboxing", it would be "sextaboxing" - Then you say "what about hexadecimal?" - well hexadecimal is a alpha-numeric value of base 16 which is totally irrelevant.
Also more evidence that Quint > Pent
You say "Quadboxing", not "Tetraboxing" or "Chaturboxing"
Take a look at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerical_prefix
Notice how by default we follow the Latin prefixes but people like Griznah decide they suddenly want to switch over to the more confusing Greek prefix.
So Griznah, STFU, I WIN, GTFO MY IRC.

I say "pentaboxing" because that flows alot better than quintboxing to me.
There is no "right" or "wrong". Penta, hexa and the others aren't exclusivly used for shapes, like some brits like to think.
I use dualboxing, triboxing, quadboxing and then pentaboxing.
So nah, I can't lose this, since 1) you are somewhat wrong in your reasoning and 2) it's a matter of opinion.
Just because you are locked into using "hex" and "penta" as shapes, doesn't mean it's wrong, it's your state of mind that is too narrow.
And since when does Greek and Latin numerical prefixes have anything to do with "the Queens English" ?
10:44:49 < Knapenburger> Dude, I did GCSE English, I was born here, I live here, you are arguing with me, about the Queens English.
And yeah, I'm Norwegian..

Can you name one word -- off the top of your head, without using google/dictionary/etc -- that is commonly used in English and has quinq- as a prefix?
I can't think of any, but off the top of my head, penta- words :
pentagram
pentagon
pentathlon
iambic pentameter
pentacle
also see chemistry terms, pentaphosphate, pentachloride, etc. where we do not use the Latin terms - tetroxide not quadroxide, uranium hexafloride not sexaflouride, etc. We run biathlon and ride bicycles, not duoathlons and duocycles. We get sick with mononucleosis not unonucleosis. Dodecahedrons are the most worthless dice in D&D. etc.

And what do you call 5 children/animals born within one session?
Qunituplets. Not Pentatuplets.

One small correction to myself, bi- is the Greek morpheme not Latin. :)
The Latin di- is however used in chemistry.

You also say Tri-boxing, which according to the link you posted is Greek or Sanskrit. So obviously there's no hard rule for naming conventions.
Also it would be quinboxing, not quintboxing, since you usually keep the first syllable when using it to join words. I.e. quad-boxing, not quadr-boxing or tri-boxing, not trip-boxing.
Cheers,

BTW the proper term is quint- quin- quinq- quinque- etc, not qunit.
I think Qunit might be the backup band for a rapper from Quebec maybe :)

After reading the to-ing and fro-ing in this rather intelligent debate, I find that I really don't give a shit :D
I'm a simpleton....
It's one boxing, two boxing, three boxing, four boxing or five boxing.
Then again I'm now more confused. Doesn't the box in boxing refer to the number of physical machines you are running on.
So really I'm 1 boxing 4-5 characters not 4 or 5 boxing.
My brain hurts. I want to sleep now.

1 - Gimp, it isn't on either.
2 - Dual - Neither, but closest to the latin duo.(sort of)
3 - Tri - Greek
4 - Quad - Latin
So it's not like theres any consistency to go on.

Yes, your D12 cries itself to sleep at night. Esp in 4e, no Barbarian d12 hitpoints.

Quint is a count, like five identical infants is called quintuplets or a sequence of five cards of the same suit, as an ace, king, queen, jack, and ten is a quint major.
Penta is an adjective, like a five sided building; the Pentagon. It is a description of a single object.

What I don't get is what if I am 20 boxing? Is it Icosboxing or do i keep the 'a' and make it icosaboxing. Honestly, this is the only thing keeping me from adding the other 15 accounts :(
The formations also confuse me. If I make my toons form a star to fight is it a pentagon? We are 3d dimensional characters, making a 1 dimension design so I could be Pentagram or Pentacle. It's stuff like this that keeps me up nights.

I'll never understand how people think there's something wrong with arguing about things on the internet, as if it's somehow an inferior medium for communication. (quite the opposite)
The problem with arguments such as this one is that it's just a silly thing to try and use logic to solve. The word "boxing" as we're using it is a brand new word - or brand new definition of an old word - and so it would have no established or accepted naming convention. Naming something based off logic or a vote is ridiculous because that isn't necessary with language. Language is established through use. Besides, even if we all agree about calling it one thing or another, we'd be assholes to ever actually berate someone for using the other word, since it's perfectly clear and correct English to use either if you aren't aware of the community conventions.

i was wondering how long it would take for a thread as bad as raf #200 and congratulations we have a winner, argueing somantics is not only moot, its completely useless. claiming victory is just that over the internet, its claiming and nothing more, hence the special olympics reference posted by the "smart" person in this thread.
use whatever phrase you want, say what you want, do what you want, even argue if you want but dont ever expect the argument to end, because the medium called the internet allows for people to never back down.
ps. you only ever really lose an argument over the internet when you resort to using the words "nazi or hitler"

if a gm asked what you where doing, i would keep it simple so he would understand it, no point in getting your acountS banned becous you used words he have to google to find out what ment.
on the other flipside of the coin, does it really matter what one call the various number of boxing as long as people understand what we are doing?
use latin, or greek or tech english or plain english, as long as the people your talking to understand what your saying.
i usually keep it simple and say multi boxing, or five boxing everyone with average english aka most wow players understand that,
pretty sure that both quenit, penta, multiboxing, five boxing and other words are correct as long as it is used in the rigth situation.

"five boxing" or "multiboxing" is my general answer, can't expect the "omg you're a loser playing 4 accounts" to know what penta is if he can't count to 5.

To that point, I think this is what most people think is wrong with arguing over the internet ;)

Uh... looks like the vote is 63% Penta, unless there's some other arbitrary points scheme to determine the most popular that I don't know about.
